Where are you? he asked me.
I'm walking.
In the shadows ahead I could see feet poking out but I knew they weren't feet. It was the base of a phone machine. His voice was coaxing me into seeing something dangerous in the dark and I was waiting to see only a phone machine there, nothing exciting or frightening, waiting to be disappointed. Recognizing desire to be scared shamed my walk into a slumped shuffle- Fear isn't a worthwhile destination. I closed the phone, feeling fairly confident that he would not show up on my doorstep (not that I was there anyway) because there would be little to find there either way.
